On December 21, a new substitution maintenance therapy site was opened in Odesa. The site is a center for integrated comprehensive medical and social assistance to people who use drugs.
A new substitution treatment center has been created on the basis of the city psychiatric clinic within the framework of the “Fast-track TB/HIV responses for key populations in EECA cities” project with the support of the International Charitable Foundation “Alliance for Public Health” and the NGO “Youth Development Center”.
Two doctors and four nurses will work in the new center of integrated services and the provision of substitution therapy. It is planned that up to two hundred patients will be able to receive the necessary assistance by taking tableted drugs under the supervision of health workers. Testing for HIV and viral hepatitis will be also provided. With the support of the City Center for Social Services for Families, Children and Young People, a social worker and a psychologist for PWID as well as addicts’ families will be able to be consulted at the substitution treatment center.
Currently, there are two SMT sites in Odesa, where 344 people receive treatment. Both are located at Peresyp district, therefore the opening of one more center will bring medical care closer to the residents of Malinovsky and Primorsky districts, as well as ensure the involvement of new patients in the substitution treatment program.
